1969 年，約翰．麥康內爾（John McConnell）首先向聯合國提案，將每年春分定為「世界地球日」。然而隔年由蓋洛．尼爾森（Gaylord Nelson）在全美校園提倡舉辦的座談會，亦名為「世界地球日」，並逐漸擴大成全球響應的活動。此後每年4月22日這天，正式成為「世界地球日」，並在世界各地由許多國家共同慶祝。

Earth Day is a name used for two different observances, both held annually during spring in the northern hemisphere, and autumn in the southern hemisphere. These are intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment.
The United Nations celebrates Earth Day, which was founded by John McConnell in 1969, each year on the March equinox, while a global observance originated by Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in, and since January 1970 also called Earth Day, is celebrated in many countries each year on April 22.
